Until 2019, a chicken sandwich was just a chicken sandwich. Hungry patrons would go to their favorite fast-food spot and pick up their favorite one. However, since Popeyes released their now infamous chicken burger, the war for the best chicken sandwich in the land is now on. Let’s take a look at the Top 10 Fast Food Chicken Burgers. Some of which were voted by our loyal viewers.
10. Shake Shack
When Shake Shack first mentioned that they were releasing a chicken sandwich, people began to speculate about how good it could be. More famous for its hot dogs, a lot of people didn’t Shake Shack had what it took to make a great chicken sandwich. How wrong all those people were. Calling it ChickenShack, the burger was released and Shake Shack fans went crazy for it. Sticking very much within the Shake Shack ethos of simple yet tasty food; the ChickenShack uses tender chicken breast, which is then breaded and deep-fried, and it’s served with lettuce and a buttermilk herb mayo. All on a perfectly toasted bun. Considering that Shake Shack is a relatively new fast food joint, it has managed to keep up with the ‘old school’ fast-food chains with its Hot Dogs and Burgers. Now it’s added a tasty chicken sandwich to its menu, things are really looking up for this New York based restaurant. Maybe one day the Shake Shack chicken sandwich will be top of the list.
9. Burger King
While it’s true that when we are craving a tasty chicken sandwich, our first thought isn’t Burger King. After all, Burger King is more known for its burgers such as the Whopper than it is for a great chicken sandwich. However, just because a fast-food restaurant doesn’t specialize in something, doesn’t mean it can’t make a good one. Over the years Burger King has given us quite a few choices when it comes to the chicken sandwich. While a lot of them did hit that chicken spot, Burger King does struggle to really make a great chicken sandwich. One of the closest they’ve come to a winning chicken sandwich is with their Crispy Chicken Sandwich. Taking 100% white meat chicken fillet, breading it and serving it with lettuce, tomato, and mayo is a good start and they also offered a spicy version. Being part of their attempts to simplify their foods and return to classics, with the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, Burger King gave us one of their best chicken sandwichs to date. The Crispy Chicken Sandwich was a bit of a triumph for Burger King and in our opinion, this chicken burger can hold it’s own against the big boys of the chicken world.
8. White Castle
Over the years, White Castle has really upped their game when it comes to their food and has expanded their menus with great effect. Although, to most people they will forever be known for their wonderful sliders. White Castle has gained a lot of popularity since the Harold and Kumar films; this could have been a big reason as to why they decided to do more than just burgers. They have introduced us to the Waffle Slider and the Chicken Slider. The Waffle Slider first appeared in 2015 with a lot of other waffle options. Belgian waffles, Breakfast Waffle Slider, and the Chicken and Waffle Slider. The Chicken Waffle Slider had waffles imported from Belgian, that’s how much White Castle wanted us to love this sandwich. It was a simple sandwich with a breaded patty, country gravy and bacon crumbles. The Chicken Slider is just like their regular sliders; a soft square bun and a breaded cutlet. White Castle’s food is so popular at this point that it is in the frozen food section of your local grocery store, readily available to warm up in your microwave or steam them on the stove. White Castle may not be involved in the current chicken sandwich battle on social media and in the media, but then they don’t need to be involved. After movies devoted to them and great food on their menus, White Castle has more than proved why they are so respected and much loved.
7. Wendy’s
Aw Wendy’s, how we love you. With so many fast-food restaurants around these days, Wendy’s often gets overlooked. Known for its square burgers, Wendy’s often gets overshadowed by the likes of McDonald’s and Burger King. Which we don’t think is fair. Recently Wendy’s has made a few changes within their restaurants and on their menus in order to take the kings of fast foods crown. One of the big changes Wendy’s has made is introducing the Made to Crave menu. This new menu focusses on sandwich lines and vows to unlock a new world of flavors. Within the Made to Crave line, Wendy’s is giving us three great new chicken sandwichs; Barbecue Chicken, Avocado BLT and S’Awesome Bacon chicken. Each sandwich is made with all-white chicken breast fillets and contains none of the nasty artificial flavors or preservatives. Firstly to the Avocado BLT; this take on the classic BLT comes with a chicken fillet, bacon cheese lettuce, tomato, and some creamy avocado and topped off with a buttermilk ranch sauce. Next is the S’Awesome Bacon Chicken, which brings the classic flavors of Wendy’s S’Awesome sauce to a bacon and chicken sandwich. Then comes the Barbecue Chicken which is exactly how you would want a barbecue chicken sandwich. Spicy chicken with fried onions and pickles, topped off with some Kansas-style barbecue sauce. Delicious.
6. Arby’s
If you are looking for a truly great chicken sandwich, then why not go to a fast-food restaurant that specializes in truly great sandwichs. Arby’s are famed for their sandwichs and the piles of meat they put in them, as well as their amazing curly fries. So, it’s no wonder that we find Arby’s riding high on our list of the best chicken sandwiches in the fast-food world. Arby’s has always made tasty and popular chicken sandwiches, but a few years ago those sandwiches got even better. Arby’s switched to a new chicken fillet which is bigger and juicier. Adding this new fillet to their existing chicken line; Chicken Bacon Swiss, Chicken Corden Blue, and the ever-popular Crispy Chicken has been a real hit with Chicken sandwich fans. Not only that but Arby’s also released a Buffalo Chicken Slider.This dish comes with a massive chicken fillet that has been marinated in buttermilk, which helps the chicken stay juicier for longer. Arby’s fans went crazy for this sandwich and the Buffalo Chicken Slider quickly became one of their best sellers.
5. McDonald’s
McDonald’s has a lot of chicken sandwiches to choose from. One of the reasons why we appreciate McDonald’s so much is because they are dedicated to adding new things to their menu, even if it is only for a limited time. Every Summer, McDonald’s roll out a new menu that offers a few tasty options including new chicken sandwichs with a premium cut of breaded chicken. This has included the Pesto Chicken Sandwich and the Tomato and Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich. Over the years McDonald’s has had various options of chicken sandwiches but they started with the classic, and still popular, McChicken. Sesame seed bun, fried chicken patty, lettuce, and that tasty McChicken sauce, it is a lot of people’s go-to chicken burger choice. Nowadays you can even jazz up the simple McChicken sandwich by adding cheese and bacon. The newest variation of their chicken sandwich is the Spicy BBQ Sandwich. Which is a buttermilk battered chicken, covered in spicey BBQ sauce. It’s then topped off with onions and pickles and served on a McDonald’s sesame seed bun. The Spicy BBQ sandwich proved to be a big hit but whether you are a fan of this new chicken sandwich or like to try one of their new seasonal chicken specials, or you want to stick to the classic McChicken sandwich, McDonald’s has a chicken burger for you.
4. Popeyes
Popeye’s Chicken is the place to go to when you want a great piece of chicken. However, whenever we had a hankering for a great chicken sandwich, we didn’t think of Popeyes. We mainly went there for the chicken Tenders and red beans and rice. Until recently that is. Earlier in 2019 Popeyes released a chicken sandwich that almost broke the internet. For a limited time only, Popeyes gave us a chicken sandwich that was going to equal their rivals in the chicken game, Chic-Fil-A. We all rushed to our local Popeyes to try it out. So big was the frenzy for this sandwich Popeyes actually ran out of it in under two weeks! People quickly took to social media to voice their praise for the sandwich but some also voiced their disappointment at not getting to try it. The demand for this chicken sandwich was so high that Popeyes had to take to their own social pages to post an announcement that simply said. “Y’all. We love that you love The Sandwich. Unfortunately, we’re sold out (for now).” Popeye’s even implemented a BYOB (Bring Your own Bun). This meant that you could just buy their chicken strips and put them on your bun. The BYOB plan didn’t really work but Popeyes listened to their fans and on November 3rd, 2019, they brought back the chicken sandwich to all their stores nationwide. The public rejoiced as many of them got to try this sandwich for the first time. It may have been noticed by many fast-food fans out there that November 3rd was a Sunday, a day that Chick-Fil-A is famously closed. We think Popeyes are taking one last dig at their chicken rivals.
3. KFC
KFC is killing the chicken sandwich game. This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise because they are a chicken-based fast-food restaurant and one of the finest in the world. As of late, KFC has been introducing some chicken sandwiches that are knocking some of these other sandwiches off their pedestal. Their Cheetos chicken sandwich made such an impact that every social media trend tried to jump on the bandwagon. Influencers were painting their nails with Cheetos dust, Mukbang videos were popping up like no one’s business, and YouTubers were showing you how to DIY your very own Cheetos sandwich. The sandwich was an undeniable hit. KFC has now moved on to testing a new menu of food; chicken and donuts. The options for this menu is to pair a donut with either chicken tenders or chicken on the bone. They have also included a chicken sandwich on this menu known as the Crispy Colonel Sandwich. The donuts resemble those of Krispy Kreme and the chicken looks to be one of their regular chicken breasts. This chicken sandwich is already blowing up on social media and we can see why. Fried chicken and donuts? Yes, please.
2. Church’s Chicken
Church’s Chicken managed to get a little bit of the light during the recent feud between Popeye’s and Chick-Fil-A’s chicken sandwich. Fans wanted to see how Church’s Chicken held up against two of the more popular chicken spots. That being said, does Church’s even need the competition? After all, they are kind of in a class of their own. If you like Church’s, you like Church’s. They never seem to care who is better or less than them which is of a good business model and a great attitude to have. No wonder so many people love them. They have been around for long enough that people know what they will be getting when they go there. One popular chicken choice was introduced not too long ago and that was Big Tex Sandwich. This sandwich starts with one of Church’s most popular items, the chicken tenders, and packs them into a truly awe-inspiring meal. Along with two hand-battered chicken breast meat tenders, the sandwich has bacon, cheese, lettuce, pickles, and mayo and is finished off between two buttered slices of Texas toast. This sandwich has proved to be a big hit and a worthy entry on our list of best chicken sandwiches.
1. Chick-Fil-A
Now comes the number one chicken sandwich on our list. Many of our subscribers championed this tasty chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-A. Chick-Fil-A knows their chicken. and they know their audience. They cater to what they know and this has allowed them to master the chicken market. There was recently a debate that took place over Instagram and Twitter about who had the best sandwich. The top contenders were Popeye’s Chicken and Chick-Fil-A. Although there was no clear winner, as the debate is still going on! Chick-Fil-A however, was certainly talked about in a good light and many people have Chick-Fil-A as their number one chicken place. Popeyes may have sold out of their chicken burger, but Chic-Fil-A wasn’t worried. But just what is so great about a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich? Well, their slogan is “home of the chicken sandwich,” that’s a good start. The company doesn’t make any gimmicky sandwiches either it just does straight-up juicy chicken breast. You can get it grilled or fried but that’s about it and they don’t overdress the chicken, which some fast food places have been known to do. The wildest you can get is a few bacon strips and cheese. In fact, the most popular chicken sandwiches on their menus are; the Spicy Deluxe Chicken Sandwich, which comes with a blend of spicy peppers, Pepper Jack cheese, and pickle. The Chicken Biscuit, which is their famous boneless chicken fillet served on a buttermilk biscuit, which is baked fresh every day and then there’s the classic chicken sandwich. Which is a basic chicken sandwich done in the Chick-Fil-A way. They have great reviews, many die-hard fans, and several locations across the country, including one in Toronto, Canada. Chicken is easy to cook but hard to perfect. Chick-Fil-A has managed to provide fans of the chain restaurant with a reliable and mouth-watering sandwich.
