10. Loaded Chicken Wrap
Once upon a time whenever we heard the word Popeye, we automatically thought of a spinach-eating sailor. These days the cartoon adventures of Popeye and his girlfriend Olive Oil are a distant memory and now when we think Popeye, we think of delicious fried chicken. Officially called Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen; having been called Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits and Popeyes Fried Chicken and Biscuits before that, Popeyes started with one simple goal and that was to serve great home-style fried chicken. With that in mind, where better to start than with Popeyes Loaded Chicken Wrap. This tasty classic is packed with everything that makes Popeyes so special. Golden chicken strips mixed with red beans and rice, all wrapped in a cheese flavored tortilla. Most fast-food restaurants serve wraps of some kind these days, especially chicken, but what makes this one different to the others is that Popeyes twist; adding the red beans and rice to the crispy chicken gives this wrap a nice contrast in textures and the flavors hit all the right Popeye notes., Plus, if you are looking for a little heat then ask for a little hot sauce. The Loaded Chicken Wrap is also part of Popeyes ‘Big Deal’ value range. So not only is it a tasty treat, but it’s cheap on the wallet too. For a little fun fact; Popeyes was actually named after Gene Hackman’s character in the French Connection and not the cartoon sailor.
9. Macaroni And Cheese
Is there anything better than a good Mac and Cheese? The gooey, cheesy, warm bowl of deliciousness is one of the best comfort foods in the whole wide world. Not only that but mac and cheese is fun. It reminds us of our carefree childhoods and whenever we want to relive those moments as adults, then grabbing a big bowl of mac and cheese will instantly transport us back to those days. The mac and cheese at Popeyes is made with classic elbow pasta and drenched in the tasty cheese sauce. This side dish is also one of the cheapest versions of mac and cheese out there and you get a decent portion for your buck. Popeyes may be known for its chicken but it does this American classic dish as well as anyone.
8. Tenders
If there is one thing that a fried chicken fast food restaurant has to do well, then it’s chicken tenders. The deep-fried chicken breast strips are a staple of any fried chicken place and therefore must be a signature dish. Get this wrong and your fried chicken business won’t last long. Luckily for all us chicken fans out there, Popeyes chicken tenders are truly magnificent. These chicken strips are coated in a very crispy batter for extra texture and crunch. The chicken is then deep-fried to perfection and flavored for your specific needs. As with most of their dishes, Popeyes offers its tenders in either spicy or mild flavor. We personally love a bit of heat with our chicken, but if you want to play it safe then mild is just as tasty. Whichever flavor you choose, the chicken will come out crispy, bursting with flavor and so juicy that you’ll be wanting more. If you’re looking to give your chicken tenders that something extra, then try adding a drizzle of honey to really bring out the spicey flavors. We’re sure that you’ll be licking the plate clean.
7. Mashed Potato And Gravy
Popeyes may be famous for its deep-fried chicken, but there is something else they do just as well and that is side dishes. As you’ll see from our list of 10 Popeyes foods that we all go crazy for, Popeyes has a great many side dishes that are truly inspired and are worthy of a list all to themselves. One of our personal favorites is their mashed potato and gravy. A lot of restaurants and fast-food chains offer a mashed potato dish, but none of them are quite like the one that Popeyes offers. Starting with a very smooth and silky mashed potato, Popeyes adds its gravy, which isn’t your typical brown gravy, it’s actually Cajun gravy. The Cajun gravy is a lot less greasy than most brown or chicken gravy and it’s packed with so much more flavor as well. Using meat and their signature spices, the gravy adds heat and makes the tastebuds dance with flavor. All of which pairs perfectly with the creamy mashed potato. Popeye’s mashed potato and cajun gravy gives us a completely new twist to an old, and some would say boring meal. Compared to other fast-food chains, this potato dish is also one of the cheapest too.
6. French Fries
The good old reliable French fries. Is there anything that is more ‘fast food’ than Fries? Whatever your favorite restaurant is or your go-to type of fast food, there will always be French fries. Over the years the has been much debate about who exactly makes the best French Fries; is it McDonald’s or Burger King? KFC or Chick-Fil-A? Or maybe you’re an ‘Arby’s or Wendy’s person? The list of potential French fries battles is almost endless. While many people out there are devoted to their favorite French fries and the fast-food restaurant that serve them, there may be one option that everyone has overlooked. We ask for just a moment of your time to discuss Popeyes French fries which, could potentially be the best French fries in the world. These French fries are not only cooked to a golden and crunchy perfection, but Popeyes French fries comes with a good dusting of Cajun spice. That little extra kick of spice takes these French fries to another level, and it’s hard to picture us going back to just regular French fries. If you’re looking for more than just French fries then Popeyes also offers their Loaded French fries option. This dish is their cajun fries but it comes covered with their Cajun gravy, cheese, and bacon for that little something extra.
5. Bonafide Chicken
Since it first burst on to the fast-food scene in the early 1970s, Popeyes has seen a few changes. Firstly its name; Starting out as ‘Chicken on the run,’ the goal was to compete with the popular KFC. However, Chicken on the run couldn’t keep up with the Kentucky Chicken kings and the restaurant went bust after a few months. Determined not to be beaten the restaurant came back but this time under the name Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken, which was very quickly replaced with Popeyes Fried Chicken, the name changed seemed to work and soon Popeyes found itself established and ready to franchise across the country. With more name changes coming over the decades, Popeyes finally settled on Popeyes Louisianna Kitchen. However, through all these changes that Popeye went through in order to make their restaurant successful, there is one thing they didn’t change too much and that’s their signature chicken. Popeye’s Bonafide chicken is a big crowd pleaser and one of the reasons that Popeyes succeded in the fast-food world. The chicken itself is a bone-in chicken that is marinated for twelve hours in Louisiana herbs and spices. The chicken is then hand-battered and breaded before being freshly deep-fried. As with all of Popeyes chicken, there is a spicy and mild version. The Bonafide chicken is some of the best-fried chicken on the market today and one taste of those Cajan spices and you’ll be coming back for more.
4. Po – Boy
There is nothing that screams Louisiana food more than a Po-Boy. This classic sub sandwich is a perfect illustration of what Popeyes is all about and as you would expect, they do it to perfection. The sandwich dates back well over a hundred years when it started out with fried Oysters on french loaves. The origin of the name ‘Po-Boy’ is a bit of a mystery but one popular theory is that ‘po’ is short for poor. Having become popular sandwiches in the early 1900s, these tasty snacks were given to people on strike, as well as local farmers and dock workers. it was seen as the sandwich for the ‘poor-boy’ and so the name stuck. Not everyone believes this theory, but the name stuck none the less and the PO-Boy sandwich became a staple of the Louisiana area. The contents of the sandwich can vary but it’s usually made with meat, chicken or beef traditionally, and seafood such as shrimp. Popeyes offers both a chicken Po-Boy and a Shrimp one. The chicken Po-Boy is many people’s favorite and consists of battered chicken tenders, your choice of spicy or mild, with lettuce, pickles, and mayo all served on a French baguette. The sandwich is a good size for the cheap price, and it’s filled to the brim with that deep-fried chicken that we’ve come to love at Popeyes. Keeping it simple, Popeyes Po-Boy subs are a real crowd-pleaser.
3. Biscuits
What goes with chicken and gravy better than anything else? That’s right, it’s a good biscuit. This fluffy, buttery food is one of the best accompaniments to soaking up that tasty gravy. So, riding high on our list of Popeyes foods that we all go crazy for is their version of this classic southern bread. The biscuit itself is actually one of the more simple foods to make as the dough doesn’t need time to proof or rise. However, even though it’s a fairly simple dish to make, many people, and many fast-food restaurants, still get it wrong. A great biscuit should be rich, buttery and most importantly, a great biscuit should be fluffy. It should be like biting into a pillow that has just been dipped in butter. That’s exactly what you get when you order Popeyes biscuits. As with a lot of items on the Popeyes menu, it’s not only tasty but it’s cheap too and these biscuits are among the cheapest items on sale. Depending on where you live, you can pick up Popeyes biscuits two for a dollar. Most chicken fast-food restaurants sell their own versions of biscuits, but in our opinion, none of them come close to this delightful dish from Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen. They are so good that the restaurant was once named Popeyes ‘Chicken and Biscuits,’ that’s how good they are and how proud of the biscuits Popeyes were.
2. Chicken Sandwich
There has been an ongoing argument that has been ragging for years; what chicken place is better? Popeyes or Chick-Fil-A? Both places have their die-hard and loyal fans, none of which want to admit to liking the other. It’s fair to say that Chick-Fil-A has had a major boost in popularity in recent years but Popeyes, not wanting to let their competitors get the better of them, decided to hit Chick-Fil-A where it hurt. In early 2019 Popeyes released a classic chicken sandwich. It may not seem that bold, Chick-Fil-A certainly wasn’t worried. But everyone went crazy for this simple and tasty chicken sandwich. So much so that Popeyes completely sold out of it in less than two weeks. What started out as a publicity stunt by Popeyes, turned into a media frenzy as everyone wanted to get their hands on this sandwich. The spicy chicken dish became an instant hit for Popeyes and they are now ready to bring it back. As of November 3rd, 2019, the chicken sandwich will be once again available to order from Popeyes. This will no doubt be a huge event, we suggest getting to your local Popeyes early to avoid the masses and to make sure you get your hands on this golden, spicy treat. It must also be noted that November 3rd is a Sunday. That’s right, Popeyes are deliberately re-releasing their chicken sandwich on the day that Chick-Fil-A is famously closed. That’s one more dig from Popeyes to their rivals.
1. Red Beans And Rice
Out of all of the dishes that we have listed on Popeyes foods that we all go crazy for, it may be interesting to know that a lot of people’s favorite dish isn’t chicken. Not only that but it isn’t even a main food item either. What we must all talk about now is the infamous and truly inspirational side dish of Red Beans and Rice. This may not sound like a meal worth shouting about; after all, it is just beans and rice, right? Wrong. This dish is so much more than that. Coming from Popeyes southern roots, Red beans, and rice is as far from fast food as you can get, whilst still being in a fast food restaurant that is. The spicy chicken stock mixing with those tasty red beans and rice is enough to warm anyone’s soul. For anyone out there that is yet to venture into a Popeyes fast-food restaurant, we urge you to do so as quickly as possible and your first stop on a Popeyes testing journey should be the amazing Red beans and rice. Order it as a side to some of their more spicy chicken dishes, or just order it by itself. Either way, Popeye’s red beans, and rice dish is a must for all food lovers.
