Ever since Daredevil debuted on Netflix a little over two years ago, fans have known what was in store for the blind hero. The Defenders focuses on Charlie Cox’s Daredevil along with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. These heroes have lower stakes than the Avengers — that’s been part of their appeal — with darker tones and more brutal violence. With the exception of Iron Fist, each of their individual shows have been well received.
While some early reviews have panned the team-up, it’s hard not to get hyped up about it, just look at this final trailer…
While the early critical response to the show has been pretty negative, that hasn’t dimmed the hype. Each of the heroes’ shows have, mostly, focused on the impending war for New York. And while the Avengers are located in New York, they’ve recently moved from the Avengers tower to a facility upstate. Thus, they aren’t on site to help the Defenders battle the villainous Hand, which appears to be led by Sigourney Weaver’s character. Her role in the organization as well as why the reason behind Elektra’s resurrection remain to be seen.
A lot of the criticism has been latched onto the fact that each of the heroes’ shows had their own distinct tone and that they get lost in this show. There is also continued criticism of Finn Jones’ Iron Fist; from his ability to act to the lines they give him to say. However, if the show is anything like this final trailer, it really can’t be that bad. Either way, it’s the first time a group of television shows come together in this fashion and that’s something worth checking out.
