With Game of Thrones coming to an end soon, there are countless theories out there attempting to figure out exactly who’s going to sit on the Iron Throne when all is said and done. Those theories typically range from terrible and out of left field to well-thought out and intriguing.
A recent theory espoused by Brienne of Tarth herself (actress Gwendoline Christie) at San Diego Comic-Con last month has had many tongues wagging.
She told Entertainment Tonight her character “deserves” to end atop the Iron Throne when the series ends, then added a curious alternative:
“I think it could quite possibly be Bran because I think that the entire show could be a projection from inside his mind.”
If the writers listen to Christie, they could go the Soprano’s route and leave it up to the audience to figure out what happened at the end. Or better yet, do what the producers did on LOST and make it all essentially a purgatory. But with all the world-building, politics and bloodshed the audience endured, if the ending does go metaphysical, there could very well be a real “Winter”coming to the offices of HBO.
Besides, some fans argue that Bran is one of the least liked characters on the show. It’d take an entire army of White Walkers to stop angry mobs of couch surfers from roasting D.B. Weiss and David Benioff and mounting their heads on spikes outside the gates of HBO. And if Brienne were to end up on the throne at all, it would be a disappointment — how many lead characters would have to bite the dust for that to happen?
While in San Diego, she also answered questions about Star Wars: The Last Jedi. She also opined that “nothing” will happen between Brienne and love-sick Tormund.
Now, at this point, fans have really bought into George R.R. Martin’s universe hook, line and sinker. Let’s hope the writers — and Martin — have something better up their sleeves for the — rumored bittersweet — end.
