We have seen it happen over and over again; Our favorite band member FINALLY decides to branch out from the group and fly solo. Let’s face it, there is always a star that shines just a little bit brighter than the rest and it only makes sense that they seek out a career all their own. Although it may not have always been easy, these artists really brought everything to the table and gave it their all. Some of these solo careers lasted a hot minute with only a one hit wonder coming from it. Some others are still going strong today; tearing up the charts with hit after hit. When the whole idea of a girl/boy band came out, we thought (or perhaps hoped) it would be all of them together until the end. That really is no longer the case. Today, it is completely normal for artists to cut the umbilical cord and do their own thing. We are no longer shocked by any group separations like we were in the past. Let`s take a closer look at the following 15 solo artists who came from a boy/girl band…
15. Justin Timberlake- Nsync
Ahh, the one major member of the band that everyone had their eyes on since day one. Timberlake has come a long way from his super curly hair and synchronized group dance moves to where he is today. He is happily married to actress Jessica Biel and proud father of their son Silas. It is fair to say this cutie has grown up nicely. He made everyone shake it on the dance floor with his amazing dance songs like Rock Your Body and Bringing Sexy Back. He was very calculated when coming into the solo scene. One of his first solo hits featured a Britney Spears look-a-like in the video that poked at her alleged cheating that lead to their public break up. The song What Goes Around really brought attention to him and nobody could look away.
14. Geri Halliwell- Spice Girls
Who can ever forget the spice girl who emphasized the meaning of Girl Power the most? Yes, Ginger spice, that`s who. This redhead was wacky and wild and her outfits always caused a stir. Whether it was the mini British flag dress that she rocked on stage with her mates or her insanely high platforms that encouraged the style of the decade, this spice girl was spicy! She stunned the world when she announced she was leaving the group, and the news hit every news stand possible. At that time, it was unheard of that a member would leave a group when it was still peaking; it burst everyone`s bubble because it meant the end of the Spice Girl era. Thankfully years later, the group reunited and rocked the stage again making us all spice up our lives just one more time!
13. Ashley Parker Angel- O Town
O-Town was actually the beginning of the whole idea of a boy band. They debuted on a reality TV show called Making The Band that followed a group of men who were competing to become members of the next famous boy band. Ashley Angel Parker made the cut and was a fan favorite during their fifteen minutes of fame. His boyish good lucks had all the girls and even some guys crushing. There was no doubt he would eventually do his own thing when it came to music. In 2004, after O-Town had officially lost it`s public spark, Parker filmed his own reality show called There and Back on MTV, filming his solo pursuit as he signed with Universal Records. Overall, he received positive reviews on his solo attempt and had a few #1 hits on the charts. In 2006, he ended up touring with Ashlee Simpson and only really found short lived success as a solo artist.
12. Nick Carter- Backstreet Boys
This boy band swept the nation and was the object of everyone`s desire, at least the young ladies’ desire. Whether you preferred bad boy AJ Mclean or babyface Nick Carter, there was someone in this band just for you. There is no doubt that each member of the band had a separate and unique voice from each other which allowed them to blend their voices effortlessly or make it big on their own. Carter decided to give it a shot once the insane popularity simmered down. He released his first solo album Now or Never in 2002 that peaked at #17 on the Billboard charts. In 2003, he tried to release a second solo album but cut it short when the Backstreet Boys decided to reunite and go on tour. Backstreet`s back, alright! He was a huge success both in the band and on his own.
11. Gwen Stefani- No Doubt
This was one of the most anticipated breakout careers that we were all waiting for. There was no doubt that Gwen was going to bring something unique to our ears and to the stage. She definitely delivered, that`s for sure. Gwen provided smash hits like Hollaback Girl and Escape which were chart toppings sensations. She has even collaborated with other artists like Akon. Not only is she extremely beautiful with a top notch voice, everyone just loves Gwen. Stefani later went on to be a judge on the hit TV show The Voice, where she coaches singing hopefuls in this widely popular talent show. She has countless makeup endorsements including Revlon and still rocks her famous red lips despite her solo success. No Doubt was an amazing band with hits that are still loved today. Whether solo or with the group, she is not just a girl, she’s a powerhouse.
10. Beyoncé- Destiny`s Child
Beyoncé is probably one of the most famous and talented artists to hit the scene in the past decade. There was always something about her that made everyone know that she was born to be a star. She even revealed to Oprah that she has an alter ego named Sasha Fierce that takes over once she hits the stage. When she was a member of Destiny`s Child, she always stood in the center and definitely displayed the strongest vocals of the three members. It almost seemed as if the other girls were her backup singers. Her solo success is at an all time high as she surprises her fans by releasing albums with no warning or countdown. It`s hard to keep up with this superstar but our eyes and ears are wide open because she doesn’t look like she is slowing down any time soon.
9. Travis Barker- Blink 182
Barker really stood out as an amazing drummer for the pop punk band back in the 2000`s. With his talent, it was no surprise that he would eventually branch out and work on solo projects. Thankfully, his band mates were nothing but supportive, which is not always the case when band members fly solo for the first time. He collaborated with many famous artists like the late DJ AM, Steve Aoki and The Game. He got so famous that he even starred in his own reality TV series with new wife Shanna Moakler. The show followed the couple, their life with their kids and his musical career. He and Shanna are no longer together, but Barker is still shining with his musical success. Rock on!
8. Harry Styles- One Direction
Unless you have been living under a rock you have surely heard of one of the biggest boy bands since The Beatles. Yes, that would be the famous One Direction that makes almost every little child and teen jump up and down and scream like a maniac in their presence. One member, Harry, decided that it was his time to leave this famous band and become a solo artist. This scandal went down in March 2016 and shocked the world. He signed with Columbia Records and is writing and releasing songs by the minute. On May 12th, 2017 Harry released his self-titled solo album which no doubt sold like crazy. He has a huge fan base and it doesn’t look like he needs to worry about being successful on his own. One Direction or not, Harry has certainly gone in the right direction.
7. Fergie- The Black Eyed Peas
This band took off when they released a powerful song; `Where is the love` that opened up the world`s eyes and motivated us to make positive change in the world. Fergie has a Gwen Stefani feel to her with her originality and unique voice. It was no surprise that she was the next female singing sensation to start topping the charts when she broke away from the band. It is safe to say that she came a long way from major substance abuse to winning awards and being a super star. Very few people know, but Fergie was also once in an all girl band called Wild Orchid. She eventually left Wild Orchid and made it big with The Black Eyed Peas and then went on to enjoy success in her solo career. She then returned to sing with the TBEP enjoying further success with more chart topping hits. And her second album is supposed to be released in the first quarter of 2017. That’s gone by, but there doesn’t seem to be a confirmation on the release date. But we are sure that it will be Fergalicious.
6. Wyclef Jean- The Fugees
The Fugees were at an all time high in the 90`s and were dominating the hip hop world. The three members included Wyclef, Lauryn Hill and Pras Michel. They enjoyed major success, especially with the song Killing Me Softly. After that, Lauryn and Wyclef both decided it was time to do their own thing. He released an album called The Carnival and even featured Lauryn on it. It was a huge success and was done his way, just like he wanted. He collaborated with many other artists including Ludacris and Will.I.Am. He has since made many appearances on television shows like Law and Order and The Chapelle Show. He is currently married and has one daughter.
5. Diana Ross- The Supremes
The Supremes and Motown go hand and hand. They made history premiering as one of the first groups to sing during that era. They went on to have 12 number one hit singles on the Billboard Top 100 which was very impressive. The group looked like the definition of glitz and glamour and the world did not anticipate what one female vocalist was about to show us all! After much time planning and trying to find a replacement for Ross, The Supremes singer finally left to start her solo career. Rosses’ departure from the group was made known to the world in 1969. To this day, she is extremely famous and admired worldwide. Her solo career was huge and was probably best for the group as tensions began to rise prior to her leaving.
4. Selena Gomez- The Scene
In 2008 a very pop group called Selena and The Scene was formed. Selena was the lead vocalist of a band with all male instrumentalists. They actually did very well and even went platinum with the album Kiss & Tell. The most famous song that we all remember blaring from our radios nonstop was Love You Like a Love Song. In 2012, Selena decided to take a break from the scene, the music scene that is. She focused on her acting and her overall health and reemerged later to sing once again, but this time on her own. Selena`s most recent accomplishment is her role as executive producer on the Netflix hit 13 Reason Why. She is definitely killing the Hollywood scene and thriving on her own happily. We are excited to see what she comes out with next, whether it is in the music arena or otherwise.
3. Nick Lachey- 98 Degrees
After the 90′
s peaked with the boy/girl band craze, it was all about the solo artists. Nick was no different by the time the 2000`s rolled around. In 2006, he released his first solo album and ended up with a smash hit called What`s Left of Me. The video featured Vanessa Minnillo portraying his onscreen wife who is ready to leave the marriage. The video had a lot of tongues wagging because it debuted just after he and superstar Jessica Simpson filed for divorce. The couple had one of the first reality TV shows that followed their everyday life putting their marriage right in the spotlight. Ironically Nick ended up marrying Vanessa Minnillo in 2011 and is still with her today.
2. Omarion- B2K
Also known as Boys of the Millennium, this boy band emerged full force onto the music scene in the 2000`s. They had a hot five years before they fizzled out. Each member moved on to do their own independent projects. There were plenty of rumors flying around about mismanagement within the group and that it was a good thing that they finally threw in the towel. Omarion was the most successful solo artist from the group after their demise. He went on to receive a Grammy nomination as well as BET Awards. Sometimes, it is not always an easy rise to the top, but Omarion proved how persistent he could be and continued to make music and give it his all, resulting in his success and awards.
1. Amy Winehouse- Sweet n Sour
When most people think of the late singer, they often remember her wild drug induced antics, her sloppy and disheveled look and memories of her unique strong vocal abilities may be a bit foggy. Although she died young, Amy`s life was all about music. She was a member of teen rap group called Sweet ‘n’ Sour that lasted about a whole five minutes. Thankfully she kept pursuing music and went on to enjoy major worldwide success, especially with her album Back to Black. She was different from the rest of the talent at the time. She was able to power through recordings in one shot and finish amazing tracks and songs that are still played today. There is no denying that she was extremely talented and it is quite unfortunate that she had to die so young. We can always remember that her solo success was meant for her and her gift to the world was her amazing talent.
