Avengers: Infinity War Aims to Make Thanos the New Darth Vader

The Russo brothers — of Captain America fame — are returning to helm Infinity War and have said Thanos will essentially be the main character. The baddies have arguably been a weakness in Marvel movies since 2008 and it appears that the brothers are aware of this problem.

Joe Russo spoke with ComicBook.com over the weekend and touched on this as well as his expectation for Infinity War.

“The stakes are incredibly high,” he said. “I wanted to turn Thanos into Darth Vader for a new generation. He’s an incredibly intense character. Sociopathic. He takes no prisoners. I think the audience needs to be prepared when they go see these movies.”

Thanos is one of the most formidable characters in all of Marvel comics. He’s had a rough life as the one imperfect member of Titan. Because of his hideous appearance, he was ostracized by his own people. This led to a life devoid of love or understanding, something he’s passed on to his “children” by treating them like science experiments.

The MCU has a very tall order on its hands and it’s a relief hearing that they understand the stakes. They hope to shake the “villain curse” and they’re swinging for the fences with Brolin’s portrayal. And if the leaked teaser is any indication, they’ve got it right. Thanos comes off as not only hyper powerful — “Fun is not something one considers when balancing the Universe” — but devoid of emotion or empathy — “…Dread it, run from it, destiny still arrives.”

Now that Disney owns the rights to everything Star Wars, it’s looking like they’ll have two of the top film villains of all time in their stable after the release of Infinity War

With both Disney’s annual D23 conference and San Diego’s Comic-Con in the rear-view mirror, it’s only a matter of time until we’re graced with an official version of the teaser trailer for next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. That movie has been framed as the end of the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has been hinted at since the post-credit scene from the first Avengers film.

Thanos was revealed to be the one pulling the strings behind the Chitauri invasion of Earth. Infinity War will show him acquiring the six Infinity Stones, which could make him the most formidable villain the Avengers have ever faced.
