10 Nerdtastic Movies To Look Forward To This Year

Being a nerd is awesome, but you what’s also cool?! Watching movies that are made for people like us! Geek culture is everywhere these days especially in the film industry. Every year, it’s filled with awesome and badass movies, and 2017 was surprisingly a pretty good year for movies. The lineup for this year actually looks really impressive. As huge fans of comic books, science-fiction and video games, Hollywood aims to please the inner fanboy in all of us. Cinema is a great way for us to see all the franchises we deeply admire come to life! Granted, there are so many movies to look forward to this year, but it all comes down to this list. While it’s undeniable that Hollywood’s main goal is just to make a lot of money, it’s still awesome that we get to see the things we love as fans up on the big screen. And yes, even if you’re not really a ‘nerd’, you might still look forward to these films as well. Just because something is categorized as ‘nerdy’, it doesn’t necessarily mean a bad thing. Also keep in mind that these movies are just placed by their release date, and that there’s no official ranking for each one of them. Without further ado, here are ten nerdtastic movies that geeks like us might be looking forward to seeing this year!

10. Ready Player One

Ready Player One is one of those films that a lot of people are highly forward to this year. After its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival, the majority of moviegoers and critics have said the movie is a lot of fun. With this much hype and anticipation, what exactly makes this movie look so appealing to many moviegoers out there? Based on a book written by Ernest Cline, the film takes place in the future where human beings are fascinated by the OASIS, created by the deceased James Halliday (Mark Rylance), which is a huge virtual reality experience that allows people to escape their lives and just have fun exploring it. The creator announces a contest to every user out there that whoever finds the mysterious Easter Egg in the OASIS will be given his entire fortune and the power to control the entire virtual world. The moment you’ve seen the official trailer, you were probably freaking out over all the pop culture references. There’s no shame in it! Everyone likes to geek out over something once in a while. There are so many nerdy and iconic references that appear in this movie from popular franchises such as Back to the Future, Street Fighter, Overwatch, DC Comics and Tomb Raider.  It’s an intriguing concept when you hear the premise for the first time.

9. Rampage

Granted, video game movies tend to be complete garbage, mainly because they never stick to their source material which just leaves fans really irritated and disappointed. Rampage is the next game getting the film adaptation treatment, and it actually looks pretty cool. 2018 might be the year that breaks the video game movie curse after 2016 failed miserably at it with Assassin’s Creed, Ratchet & Clank and WarcraftTomb Raider just came out recently, and it was surprisingly better than most video game movies such as Mortal Kombat: AnnihilationStreet Fighter and the Super Mario Bros. movie. Based on the video game series created by Midway Games, we have ourselves a movie about a giant mutated gorilla named George fighting other mutated animals in the city. With the charismatic Dwayne Johnson in the lead role of George’s partner Davis Okoye, it will be fun seeing these two interact with other each and kick some ass on screen. The film’s premise is absolutely silly and weird, but so is the video game! Just by seeing the trailer, you can tell how disastrous the fights are going to be when you have giant animals destroying buildings, wreaking havoc, and roaming around the city! It aims to be a simple movie based on a video game about a guy teaming up with his giant gorilla pal, and fighting giant mutated creatures. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Rampage is as cool as the trailer, and that it breaks the video game movie curse!

8. Avengers: Infinity War

It’s been a decade since the first Iron Man was released in theatres. Ever since then, it was secretly setting up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it paid off big time. When the first Avengers came out, it seemed like a risky idea having too many characters in one movie, but it worked! And now we have Infinity War which is arguably one of the most popular storylines in the Marvel universe, and many comic book sweaties have been heavily anticipating this movie as they kept mentioning the Infinity Stones throughout the movies. This all builds up to the culmination that Thanos is planning to attack Earth with his Infinity gauntlet, and that makes the stakes even more higher! Not only will moviegoers be seeing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Spider-Man, Black Widow and Black Panther on screen, but this will also be the first time the Guardians of the Galaxy will be appearing alongside the Avengers. No doubt that this movie will make over a billion dollars worldwide. Avengers: Infinity War is like a celebration to remind the audience how far they’ve come. We’re also wondering what Stan Lee’s cameo is going to be like in this installment.

7. Deadpool 2

After the first installment of Deadpool was both a huge critical and commercial success, it was inevitable that Fox Studios was looking forward to making a sequel. Like other actors born to play their comic book counterparts, Ryan Reynolds completely makes the character of Wade Wilson/Deadpool, the merc with a mouth, his very own. Even Mr. Nice Guy Colossus and scene-stealing Negasonic Teenage Warhead are back as supporting characters! While it is unfortunate that Tim Miller is not returning to direct the movie, we know that as long as Reynolds sticks around with the screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to bring more energy and humor, it’s still in good hands. If you stayed till the end credits of the first movie, you probably know by now that Cable is going to appear in the sequel. Funny enough, Josh Brolin, who plays the villainous Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, is the one playing Cable. It’s so cool yet strange seeing the same actor play different characters in two separate Marvel universes. Also this time around, we’re finally getting the X-Force on the big screen with characters such as newcomer Domino! With raunchy humour, vulgarity and stylish violence, Deadpool 2 might have the potential to bring a lot more R-Rated comic book goodness like the previous film.

6. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Looks like Rogue One will not be the only spin-off in the Star Wars universe as Lucasfilms officially announced that fan favorite smuggler Han Solo will be getting his own movie. Sadly, it’s not Harrison Ford anymore since he looks a little too old to be portraying a young version of the character. Alden Ehrenreich has a lot to live up to Ford’s outstanding performance as Han Solo, but we’ll still give him the benefit of the doubt even if couple of his one-liners weren’t exactly well executed if you’ve seen the trailer. However, it is interesting to know more about the backstory of this character. We want to know more about his smuggler life before he starts meeting up with Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenoki at the cantina in A New Hope. We also want to know how he and Chewbacca became best friends since their friendship is one of the most unforgettable aspects in Star Wars history. Let’s not also forget that Donald Glover will be playing the charismatic Lando Calrissian! With Ron Roward being the director of the film, after Phil Lord & Christopher Miller were fired, he might bring something new to the franchise and make fans feel nostalgic about the character’s legacy from the old trilogy.

5. Incredibles 2

Well it’s about time we get a sequel to The Incredibles. We’ve been getting unnecessary Cars sequels that we never asked for, but it’s totally worth the wait. Not just known for being the best Fantastic 4 movie we will ever get on the big screen, the first installment has been widely praised as one of Disney Pixar’s best films! It’s not easy to make a sequel after the first one was released a decade ago, but Brad Bird comes back to direct which shows how deeply passionate he is about these characters. The Incredibles was not just an entertaining superhero movie, but it also had a good message that showcases the importance of being in a family. After being left on a cliff-hanger with the Underminer, Incredibles 2 immediately takes place after the events of the first film where they’re still dealing with becoming a normal family. While Elastigirl is out there fighting crime and bringing back the good old days of being a superhero, Mr. Incredible is at home raising his kids who also have super powers. We’ve been asking for an Incredibles sequel for a long time, so let’s hope that Brad Bird still has the talent of making great animated features.

4. Venom

To be honest, this whole Sony-Disney Spider-Man deal is getting really confusing. But who cares?! We’re getting a live-action Venom spinoff, after he was terribly executed in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Tom Hardy is undeniably going to do a good job playing Eddie Brock, it just makes us curious on how well he will be portraying Venom with motion capture. Carnage will be the main antagonist in this movie which makes us even more excited! While it is unfortunate that we don’t see Venom appearing at all in the teaser trailer, but who knows? Maybe they just want to show him in the movie. After Deadpool became one of the most successful R-Rated comic books of all time, this might have inspired Sony to make Venom R-Rated as well. It’s not officially confirmed that the movie would be rated R, but it would be stupid not to. Even Spider-Man writer Todd Macfarlane wishes for it to earn this rating, so fingers crossed once again that it will be a violent and brutal interpretation of this character. Also fingers crossed that we get a cameo from Spider-Man as well!

3. X-Men: Dark Phoenix

Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand didn’t really do the Phoenix saga from the comics justice, so now X-Men: Dark Phoenix has the responsibility to do it right this time. Bryan Singer, long time director of the X-Men film series, is no longer a part of the franchise as screenwriter Simon Kinberg makes his directorial debut with this film. The cast from X-Men: Apocalypse is coming back to save the world such as James McAvoy’s Professor X, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops, Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey and etc. As X-Men: Apocalypse finished a trilogy that began with First Class, Dark Phoenix wishes to start a new trilogy before Marvel Studios starts to utilize these characters for their cinematic universe. It will also be the first-ever movie in the franchise to be in space especially that Jessica Chastain will be playing an evil alien, mostly likely Lilandra, wishing to unleash Jean Grey’s alter ego Phoenix in order to wreak havoc. Since Simon Kinberg has been involved in the series for many years, he might be able to make the franchise feel fresh again by adding an extraterrestrial vibe to the world of mutants!

2. Aquaman

While the DC Extended Universe has been incredibly divisive among both critics and moviegoers, Aquaman, directed by horror filmmaker James Wan, might be the one that will unite both the fans and the haters of the franchise. Both Shazam and Aquaman are the ones that fans have the most hope for even if the rest of the cinematic universe, except Wonder Woman, is highly polarizing among them. Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Arthur Curry/Aquaman was one of the best parts of Justice League, and it looks like he can stand on his own in the spinoff. As we learn more about his homeworld of Atlantis in Justice League, fans didn’t get enough of the character’s backstory so maybe a standalone movie will hopefully give him more development. If they just do a good job showing the conflict between humans and Atlanteans, we’ll be pleased already. Like Wonder Woman being a solid film on its own, Aquaman might have the potential to be a great movie without relying too much on what happened to the titular character from both the events of Batman V Superman and Justice League.

1.  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

That’s right! Venom isn’t the only character from the Spider-Man franchise that will be getting his own movie this year. This time, it’s Miles Morales’ turn to take the spotlight as the new web-slinger on the big screen. Many comic book fans have been asking for a Miles Morales spinoff after getting tired with so many installments focusing on Peter Parker. If you have seen the official teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, you were probably mesmerized by the film’s animation style and its usage of vibrant colors. The filmmakers’ goal was to make it look like the audience is stepping in the world of a comic book, and it really shows. It looks like a beautiful work of art combining elements from traditional comic-book drawing styles and computer animation. Sony Pictures Animation isn’t known to be the best animation studio, but it looks like they’re now taking themselves seriously after making the masterpiece known as The Emoji Movie. This is the only time we’re ok with Sony holding the rights to Spider-Man if it means we’re getting a cool and stylish animated film involving around Miles Morales being the new web-slinger.
